The skills that will define competitive businesses over the next decade

Today’s business leaders are navigating a world shaped by frequent weather extremes, rising energy costs, supply chain disruption, rapid advances in AI, changing customer expectations and growing pressure to remain competitive. Success will depend not simply on responding to these challenges, but on building the capability to anticipate them, adapt and seize new opportunities.

The businesses that thrive over the next decade will be those that invest in the skills, knowledge and leadership needed to navigate change with confidence.

At Skillnet Climate Ready Academy, we believe climate readiness is fundamentally about building business capability. That’s why our programmes are evolving to reflect the real challenges organisations face today and the skills they will need tomorrow.

A new programme suite designed to strengthen resilience

Our new Business Risk and Resilience Suite has been designed to help organisations move beyond compliance and develop the practical capabilities needed to strengthen resilience and support long-term competitiveness.

Our Climate Risk and Resilience Programme equips organisations to identify, assess and respond to the physical and transition risks associated with climate change. Participants develop practical risk assessment, adaptation planning and resilience capabilities that can be applied directly within their own organisations.

Alongside this, our AI for Sustainability Programme explores how responsible use of technology, including artificial intelligence, can support better decision-making, improve resource efficiency, strengthen reporting and help organisations accelerate their sustainability and resilience ambitions. As AI rapidly transforms every sector of the economy, understanding how to apply these technologies responsibly and effectively is becoming a critical business capability.

This is only the beginning. Over the coming months, the Academy will introduce two further programmes that reflect some of the most significant emerging risks facing Irish enterprise.

Supply Chain Risk and Resilience will help organisations understand vulnerabilities across increasingly complex supply networks, build resilience to disruption, and strengthen long-term business continuity.

Nature Risk and Resilience will explore the growing dependence of businesses on healthy natural systems and help organisations understand how biodiversity loss and nature-related risks can affect operations, supply chains, investment decisions and future competitiveness.

Resilience underpins performance, innovation and growth

Taken together, these programmes represent a new approach to enterprise development, one that recognises resilience is no longer a separate business objective but a core capability that underpins performance, innovation and sustainable growth.

Building these capabilities isn’t simply about preparing for future regulation or managing climate risks. It’s about helping organisations become more agile, make better decisions, respond more effectively to disruption, and identify opportunities in a rapidly changing world.

The future will favour businesses that are prepared, adaptable and resilient.
